We thought we would\u00a0explain the different types of sourcing solutions available,\u00a0including near-shoring, co-sourcing and managed sourcing.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/span>IT Sourcing Models<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Generally, when certain business functions or operations are performed and managed by an external party, it is called outsourcing. In the case of IT support, many things can be outsourced; from the help desk to software development, to a small part of IT,\u00a0to all of it.\u00a0<\/span>

We normally define full IT outsourcing<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0the practice of having an external provider take care of all IT support functions and operations,\u00a0where\u00a0staff, hardware and software are\u00a0often (but not always) based at the provider\u2019s site. This could\u00a0be\u00a0in\u00a0another country, taking the form of near-shoring (within the same continent) or off-shoring (overseas).\u00a0<\/span>

A different approach is to keep the infrastructure<\/a> in-house and only outsource management and staffing to an external partner \u2013 totally,\u00a0or in part. When the IT department is managed by a service provider, you have a managed service. If only some staff members are managed by an external provider, where different service providers coexist in the same environment to keep competition high, it is called a co-sourced environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/span>Reasons for\u00a0IT\u00a0outsourcing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Why do people use outsourcing and managed services for their IT?\u00a0Well, there are many different reasons.\u00a0A KPMG report entitled \u2018UK Service Provider Performance and Satisfaction\u2019 shows how the drivers for outsourcing are constantly changing.\u00a0A\u00a0couple of years ago the main drivers were financial \u2013 \u2018cost savings\u2019 for 83%\u00a0of respondents, and \u2018financial flexibility\u2019 for 41%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>

However,\u00a0there is now a shift towards a more holistic and strategic view of this practice. Whilst \u2018cost savings\u2019 remains high\u00a0at\u00a070%,\u00a0it is now followed by \u2018access to skills\u2019 for 51% and \u2018quality improvement\u2019\u00a0for\u00a046% of respondents.\u00a0From these statistics, you can\u00a0see that\u00a0having access to\u00a0the\u00a0skills and\u00a0expertise unavailable in\u00a0in-house teams is an increasing driver\u00a0for\u00a0outsourcing IT support functions.\u00a0So is\u00a0having a\u00a0predictable\u00a0monthly\u00a0cost and\u00a0control\u00a0over\u00a0service quality through Service Level Agreements (SLAs).\u00a0All of which contribute towards service\u00a0desk cost-efficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/span>Choosing the right model<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Each\u00a0organisation has different\u00a0requirements,\u00a0and\u00a0their IT support, therefore,\u00a0needs to be personalised for maximum success. A pure model \u2013 full IT outsourcing or a fully managed service<\/a> \u2013 can be effective for some organisations, but others may feel that a mixed model, integrating co-sourcing and shared services\u00a0with\u00a0their normal in-house service, works better for them.\u00a0<\/span>

Your service provider needs to understand this and help you choose the right model for you.<\/span> The right\u00a0combination of\u00a0a\u00a0trusted IT service provider and appropriate sourcing model is\u00a0crucial in delivering\u00a0your business goals and will contribute to a shift towards digital transformation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
